The Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve

Since it's cold outside, I'm writing this in November, I want to tell you about something warm! One of the most beautiful places in Southwest Florida, in my opinion is the Six Mile Cypress Slough (pronounced: sloo) Preserve.

The Slough is located at 7751 Penzance Blvd. Fort Myers, Florida. This is only my experience (Jennifer) because unfortunately, Suki and Daddy didn't get to go on this adventure with me. He was finishing up some loose ends at the job site before relocation and well, I had a hard time convincing them that Suki isn't a D.O.G. and is in fact the "baby girl".

The Slough is a 3500 acre wetland ecosystem. I am sure that you have studied the ecosystem in class at some point. It has an Interpretive Center and Boardwalk Trail. They offer guided walks but I wanted to take my time so I chose to walk alone. I am so glad that I did.

Sometimes you just have to take "selfies"

Rainwater runs through the Cypress Slough as it makes its way to Estero Bay. As it flows through, the Slough caches the rainwater and filters it. That is natures way.

There is a countless number of animals that live at the Cypress Slough. Animals such as otters, wading birds, turtles, and alligators. I even saw a small herd of boars! All of these animals live there year round. There are others that migrate. Migrate means to move from one region or habitat to another, usually with the change of season. Birds and butterfly's migrate to the Cypress Slough as a winter home and feeding area.

Can you find the alligator?

My personal experience was amazing. I got up close and personal with "me". I learned a lot about nature that day. I also learned a lot about myself. Everything about it was beautiful.

If you would like to know more about the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve check out the Lee County Park and Rec portion of the website at www.lee.gov and the official website at www.sloughpreserve.org

Don't forget to check out the PowerPoint that goes along with this entry. **if it's not published yet, it will be soon.
